panda cub with mother panda
This koala joey was found abandoned beside a road in Brisbane, Australia last month. Named after the man who discovered him, Raymond was dehydrated and skinny, and weighed just 260g. It is believed his mother was either been hit by a car or was too ill to care for the 2-3-month-old. Initially, carers feared that Raymond wouldn’t survive because he weighed so little and wouldn’t feed properly. Julie Zyzniewski, who is looking after him, says: He had to be coaxed to feed. He was frail and his future was uncertain. Suddenly, one day he decided life wasn’t so bad and he has been absolutely powering along ever since. Picture: Jamie Hanson/Newspix / Rex Features

They’re so beautiful!
Often compared to a stick of btter, it’s hard to believe that at birth the Giant Panda, who will grow up to 353 lbs., only weighs 3-5 ounces.
Giant Pandas face the survival challenge of habitat loss, but these gentle giants have gentle constitutions. “With Giant Pandas, there are additional challenges with mating success, digestive illnesses, and maintaining a reliable and plentiful food supply.” About a fifth of the world’s panda population are in zoos and nature reserves where keepers work to replenish their populations. An unusual site in a Russian Zoo as this male bear, Balu, is very playful, affectionate and kisses his 4-year-old daughter, Diva. Father bears usually pay little attention to their cubs leaving the cub-rearing up to the mother as the father goes hunting. Balu and his “wife”, Masha, were rescued from poachers in 2002. The close bond that the parents share could be why Balu has been taking on some of the female roles, such as protecting the cub and teaching them how to swim and live in the wild. Masha seems at complete ease and trusts him with the young cubs, also unusual.
