Making the Perfect Reed - Some of my followers may remember that Spock plays the bassoon. Many bassoonists make their own reeds, as Spock is doing here, searching to make that illusive perfect reed. Cartoon by ladymac.
Here’s another old bassoon cartoon drawing that I apologize about the quality. I tried to darken and change contrast and it helped, just not as good as I wanted. Anyway, here is a bassoonist making and testing reeds. As you can see on the floor, that can be a very depressing time.

I wish this cartoon was in better quality but anyway, I think all bassoonists should understand. And for non-bassoon players, Beethoven’s 4th Symphony has one of the more difficult bassoon solos due to the fact that there are many notes that must be played too fast using the tongue in a very short amount of time, thus, the panic. Enjoy!
