My drawing of a contrabassoonist. The contrabassoon (or double bassoon, bass bassoon) produces a very deep and somewhat morose sound. It’s not okay to play one in the park. You will make the birds cry, and the sun will run away.

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]I had never heard of the composer du Puy from Sweden until I listened to this recording. The bassoonist is very good and I really like the concerto. If anyone is interested in hearing what a good bassoonist sounds like, listen to this clip.

“Bassoon Birthday Gift” by teethonreed. By the way, never put your teeth on a bassoon reed unless you plan on biting it in half. :))

Bassoon Shop by Saxton. I would have loved to go in that shop. Even now it would be cool. I don’t know where it is though. I’m not sure, but I’m guessing that not only do they fix bassoons but refit bassoons that come from Germany to make them sound more “American.” I say that because both my undergrad and grad bassoon teachers used to do that with Puchner bassoons that came from Germany.

The artist, bassoon821, may be able to play these 4 musical instruments, but I could play the top 2 - piano and bassoon. I know, she beats me.

Making the Perfect Reed - Some of my followers may remember that Spock plays the bassoon. Many bassoonists make their own reeds, as Spock is doing here, searching to make that illusive perfect reed. Cartoon by ladymac.

For non-bassoonists, these are all the keys that the left thumb has to use. Insane, isn’t it?
How hi-iipster can I be?

Road Signs. The way I see these signs - the bassoon is telling you to turn left or right or go back from where you came from and the trumpet is warning the driver that there is a big looping curve coming up. Sounds about right. Most bassoonists have a difficult time making up their minds. :) Artwork by Youkolauguna.
